"FAST JOHNNY" SCHARBROUGH
In most cities, guitarist (and singer), John Scharbrough, a.k.a. “Fast Johnny” or “Fast John” (and you can imagine why he has the nickname “Fast” --- it's earned) would be revered as a living blues legend. Historically, Indianapolis has had a thriving blues scene; however, today, the state of the economy aside, it is a much smaller scene. Aside from the big blues bar in downtown Indianapolis which seems geared to cater mostly to out-of-town visitors, there remain few true blues clubs. The current local blues scene is made up of a relatively small coterie of blues musicians, of which Mr. Scharbrough would certainly be considered as one of the very best. Mr. Scharbrough, a life-long Irvington area resident, grew up playing guitar; he lovingly credits his father for relentlessly encouraging him to just play. Mr. Scharbrough has played in, and fronted, many local blues bands, hosted blues open stages, and has played with, or opened for, many nationally-known blues musicians. He has also worked as an unpaid promoter, working to bring nationally-known blues musicians to local clubs; he has done so merely for the love of the blues genre. He was also a founding member of the Mike Gatto-fronted “Michigan Street Blues Band”, one of the better, and better known, local blues bands. Today, in addition to still playing at local clubs, Mr. Scharbrough is attempting to broaden his chops by starting to play more acoustic guitar. But . . . The Tele and the Strat don't just rest in their cases!
