The multi-talented Irvington artist, Jan Flexon, is a native of Scott County (near Big Stone Gap) in western Virginia. After many years traveling the globe, Ms. Flexon decided to settle in Irvington. Ms. Flexon recalls that growing up in the Appalachian Mountains, she was surrounded by music. “All the families were musical," she said. “Everyone played an instrument.” A normal social gathering with family and/or friends would involve playing music. She notes that bluegrass, while being the dominant music genre of the area, was certainly not the only one enjoyed and played there. It should come as no surprise then that Jan has a cousin who is also a professional musician; he is a member of the bluegrass band, “Blue Highway”. Ms. Flexon is of both Native American and European-American ancestry. In fact, she proudly describes herself as being melungeon. As an artist, Jan Flexon is many things: She is a singer-songwriter and a band leader. She plays guitar, mandolin, native flute, and percussion. In August, 2010, “Jan Flexon and the Dancin’ Nancys” released their third studio album, “Black Sky Goodbye”. A newly-completed studio album is planed for release in Spring 2011. She and the Dancin' Nancys contributed a song to the "Give A Girl A Chance" album, an all-star compilation benefiting the 20th anniversary of the Tenderness Tour. She is a poet, with a book of poems, Words Are Electric, But Not Always Static Free, having been published in Autumn, 2009 by New Century Publishing. This volume includes a CD of some of the poems being recited by Jan, accompanied with original music provided by the “Dancin’ Nancys”. The CD was published by Little Mountain Press. She is also a painter. Her paintings have been displayed at many venues throughout the United States. She laughingly describes her painting style as “Flexism” in that it is abstract, emotional, and dreamlike. Another description of painting is, in her own words, “surrealism mixed with realism.” Lastly, she is a storyteller. She has stories that have been included in Irvington's literary journal, "Ichabod's Sketchbook". Ms. Flexon is both a member of the Irvington Guild Of Artists and the Indianapolis Downtown Artists & Dealers Association.
