Benjamin Council was born in 1966 in Indianapolis, the youngest of ten children of Annie and Ralph Council.
Mr. Council’s passion for photography started in high school, after seeing a photograph by Gordon Parks called “American gothic”. A cleaning woman poses in Parks' reinterpretation of Grant Wood's famous painting of same name, with her holding a mop in one hand and a broom in the other, and an American flag in the background. By looking into her eyes, one could see her life story.
At that time, Mr. Council’s plans were to become a photojournalist, but instead, he ended up in the corporate travel business for fifteen years. Working in that world was not something that he saw himself doing for a living, but in many ways, the years in travel helped inspire him to return to photography. Mr. Council was able to travel to China, Scotland, Nicaragua, and New Zealand; and, in traveling to these places, he began to photograph them and was reminded of how much he missed it.
One of Mr. Council’s favorite quotations is by George Elliot: “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”
